Nationwide I-10 Fatality Free Project

Sometimes it just seems like car crashes will not improve in my lifetime and then a glimmer of hope. Just read about the nationwide I-10 fatality free project over Labor Day.

The "I-10 Challenge'' will begin shortly after midnight Friday and continue to 11:59 p.m. Monday, with the objective of "zero fatalities'' along the heavily traveled corridor that spans eight states, from California on the west coast to Florida on the east. - KESQ

The great part is that it was inspired by something Florida did and it proved successful.

The CHP wants to remind people in California that on average a person dies on I-10 freeway every 4 days.

The I-10 goes all across the country I just happen to be in California so I heard about it from our local CHP whom I follow on Twitter.

The campaign will be a component of the CHP's Labor Day weekend "maximum enforcement period,'' during which all available officers hit the streets to nab lawbreakers.

Ultimately, of course, I want people to stop thinking of excessive speeding as just something they equate with breaking the law and being as dangerous and pointing a gun around a crowded room but any kind of message is good.

From the Santa Marino Tribue:

No deaths on Interstate 10 in California is the public safety goal set this Labor Day weekend by the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP will have all available officers on duty over the long weekend, with a four-day, maximum enforcement period starting at 6 p.m. Friday and ending 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

CHP Officer Rick Quintero said his colleagues will be paying special attention to Interstate 10 from Santa Monica to the Arizona state line.

“The purpose of the campaign is to reduce the number of collisions and fatalities across Interstate 10,” Quintero said.

“We want people to slow down, to not drink and drive and to be vigilant,” he said. “We want to educate drivers to the dangers out there on the road and to let them know we will be out in force this Labor Day weekend to enforce the law and cite them if they break the law.”

People, these are people trying to save lives.

Possibly yours.

I will be curious to hear if this helps make a difference.
