excessive speed

Driven by Apathy

In my quest to think globally act locally I called my local Traffic Sheriff guy and mentioned that yet another parent stated they would not allow their children to walk home because people choose to drive too fast on the street, which goes in front of the school.

The Sheriff said he tickets a lot there but the parents refuse to slow down.

I emailed the PTA, I didn't hear back.

I heard from someone else that PTA doesn't want to deal with that.

So basically I'm left with looking like a radical nut who is, what, supposed to go stand on a corner with a please slow the hell down sign?

Once my show in Chicago ends I will hold a community meeting and try to gather some strength in numbers.

Despite Warnings From Traffic Experts Illinois Governor Quinn Increases Speed Limit

This article from the Chicago Tribune features so many screwed up quotes I just have to  share with you.

Apparently, despite concerns from officials who study traffic issues, the Illinois Governor has chose to make the rural speed limit increase.

Here is a quote from a Highway Safety Expert:

"Raising speed limits is politically popular, and higher speed limits get people to their destinations faster," said Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "But we have to recognize there's always a safety trade-off. There's no free lunch. And more people will die on the roads as a result."

Someone else, in defense of the approved increase said:

"I'm very pleased that he saw fit to sign it," said sponsoring Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove. "I believe that this is one small step to help bring Illinois into the 21st century along with most of the other states in this country that have speed limits of 70 or higher."

Let me bring you into the 21st Century Senator Jim Oberweis.

Traffic fatalities are killing around 30,000 Americans every year. Car crashes are the number one cause of death to children and young people.

80% of car crashes are avoidable.

This is OK with you? You want to keep up with this piece? How pathetic.

Officials have warned more people will likely die because of this.

I live in a city where most people go around 80. Daily people are dying on our LA highways, it's ridiculous that it is a norm.

People argue that people will speed anyways, I argue change the speed limit back to 55 so people's speeding will only be 65. Your chance of surviving and LIVING will go up.

Here is one last quote from the article:

Dodging a possible veto showdown, Quinn signed the measure despite opposition from the Illinois Department of Transportation, state police and leading roadway safety organizations, who feared increased mayhem on the highways, especially between cars and trucks.
