Michelle Obama: Help Us Have Safe Streets to Move On So Our Kids Can Fight Obesity
"In the end, as First Lady, this isn’t just a policy issue for me. This is a passion. This is my mission. I am determined to work with folks across this country to change the way a generation of kids thinks about food and nutrition."
- First Lady Michelle Obama
Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Sure, this is an ambitious goal. But with your help, we can do it.
Michelle Obama's passion for making kids healthier is great. But I have to say I talk to more and more parents who have children who eat well but are watching a lot of TV and playing video games.
Why?
Because it's not safe to let them bike, walk or play outside. Not solely because of the fear of being kidnapped, which statistically speaking is a very small chance, but because of the fact that car crashes are the number one cause of death to children.
Our neighborhoods are being over run by people driving their cars too fast.
And not just teenagers. Moms in minivans are equally dangerous. Often over scheduled and stressed out running their kids all around.
I wish that all neighborhoods in the USA had Traffic Calming going on. According to Wikepedia: Traffic calming consists of engineering and other measures put in place on roads for the intention of slowing down or reducing motor-vehicle traffic. This is done in order to improve the living conditions for residents living along the road[dubious – discuss] as well as to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
We need radical ideas like slower speed limits and designated days when we close a street so kids can play.
It would promote community and harmony and of course to bring it back to Michelle Obama, help fight obesity.
